Founded in 1904, Rolls-Royce has long been recognised as the maker of the world’s finest and most luxurious automobiles. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is headquartered in Goodwood, England, and has been under the ownership of BMW since 1998, which has seen the company transform its financials while maintaining its reputation as the world’s most famous luxury automotive companies.

The company specialises in large sedan platforms that are designed to ferry VIPs and executives, and is often referred to as the type of car that you would be driven in, rather than drive yourself.

Looking forward, Rolls-Royce says it will be a battery-electric company by 2030, with its first EV flagship known as the Spectre hitting the market in late 2023.

Rolls Royce FAQs

The most popular models within the Rolls-Royce stables include the Ghost, Phantom, Wraith and the Dawn, while the company’s best-selling model is by far the Cullinan SUV, which has helped to expand the company to new markets.

Currently in Australia, the Rolls-Royce range is priced from $663,650 for the cheapest member of the range, the Rolls-Royce Ghost, while the Cullinan SUV is priced from $711,150 and the Phantom is priced from $1,0014,150. The most expensive Rolls-Royce car is the Phantom 688L Extended Wheelbase which is priced at $1,119,650, though the cost of optional extras and custom touches mean the prices can rise far north of these figures.

Rolls-Royce cars are unique compared to other luxury brands due to the hand crafted nature of their vehicles, and the fact that the company is willing to add pretty much any custom touch, material or request that a customer asks for. Compared to other luxury manufacturers, Rolls-Royce is willing to use almost any material a customer requests, match any colour sample and create one-off interiors to the precise detail. The iconic pinstripe stretching from the front wing to the rear end is also hand painted by a single craftsman at its headquarters, which is unmatched by any other luxury manufacturer.

Fuel economy figures for each member of the Rolls-Royce lineup range from 13.9L/100km on a combined cycle in the Phantom, 15.1L/100km for the Cullinan SUV, 15.7L per 100km on a combined cycle for the Ghost.

Rolls-Royce offers 6.7-litre V12 engines across its road cars, including the Cullinan SUV, Ghost and the range-topping Phantom. The company has also confirmed that the Spectre battery-electric will come powered by two electric motors producing 430kW of power and 900Nm of torque.

Rolls Royce is often rated as the world’s leading luxury manufacturer, and this extends to the company’s reputation for reliability. While the maintenance costs for a Rolls-Royce vehicle might total that of a brand new car over time, the company often boasts that up to 65% of its vehicles ever produced are still driving on the road today, something that other luxury brands simply can’t match.

One of the most well-known features of a Rolls-Royce car is the retractable Spirit of Ecstacy emblem on the bonnet, as well as its coach doors that have an in-built umbrella, starlight headliners that can be matched to specific constellations in the sky, lounge seats that can massage, heat and cool their passengers, hand-crafted interior designs using a mix of leather, wood and any requested textile, custom colour palettes, self-leveling air suspension systems, large infotainment displays in the front and rear of the cabin and many more luxurious touches.

Rolls-Royce cars are still manufactured at its headquarters in Goodwood, Sussex in England, where the company has more than 1300 employees and produces more than 6000 vehicles each year.

Rolls-Royce packages each of its new vehicles with a four-year service package that covers maintenance costs for the first 48 months of ownership, with the option of extending this for an additional five years. After this point, using the Ghost as an example, Rolls-Royce says that the approximate costs of maintenance totals $6000 for each 8000 km minor inspection and service.
