For the unaware, each month Australia’s new vehicle sales are tallied up and mapped out, allowing us to find Australia’s best-selling cars overall, as well as which manufacturers and models are conquering each segment. 

Join us as we take a look at the state of the Australian car market for July, 2023, thanks to the FCAI’s latest VFACTS report. 

VFacts: Car Market Update for July 2023 Major Findings

  • Australian new vehicle sales are at all-time July highs, with 95,589 sales recorded for July, 2023, marking a 14.7 per cent year-on-year increase over the same point last year. 

  • This means that supply and production constraints in the automotive industry are easing, with strong deliveries in July. 

  • The Ford Ranger overtook the Toyota HiLux as Australia’s best-selling vehicle in July. 

  • Toyota remains Australia’s most popular manufacturer, delivering 10,000 more vehicles than its nearest rival, Mazda. 

  • Year-to-date sales in July, 2023 stand at 678,618, an increase of 9 per cent year-on-year. 

  • 678,618 vehicles sold in the strongest year-to-date figures since July, 2018. 

Australia’s Best-Selling Vehicles in July, 2023

The Ford Ranger snatched the throne from the Toyota HiLux to take out the honour of Australia’s best-selling car for July, 2023, while the MG ZS took the market by storm with a third-place finish for the month.

Australia's Most Popular Car Makers in July, 2023

In spite of the HiLux slipping to second place, Toyota’s large range of vehicles and affordable prices make it by far the most popular car maker here in Australia, more than doubling its lead over its nearest competitor, Mazda.

Which Types of Cars Sell Best in Australia?

SUVs remained by far the best-selling type of car for the month of July, 2023, amassing a near 60 per cent share of the market, followed by light commercial vehicles (utes) with a near 20 per cent share and traditional passenger cars snatching a near 18 per cent share of the market. 

  • SUVs (compact, mid-size & large) 58.9 per cent 

  • Light commercial vehicles (utes) 19.9 per cent 

  • Passenger cars 17.7 per cent 

  • Heavy commercial 3.6 per cent 

How Many Electric Vehicles Were Sold in Australia in July, 2023?

For the month of July, 2023, a total of 6846 electric vehicles were sold here in Australia, while sales of traditional hybrids and plug-in hybrid vehicles also reported significant gains. 

This gives battery-electric vehicles a 7.1% share of the market, while conventional hybrids account for a 10% share, both of which are increasing with each month that goes by.

New car sales were highest in New South Wales, followed by Victoria and Queensland rounding out the podium; the full breakdown goes as follows:

  • SA - 6,612 

  • TAS - 1,777

  • ACT - 1,438

What is the Australian Car Market Forecast?

After struggling to keep up with demand, production rates from major manufacturers are beginning to ramp up, with the result being shorter delivery times and a potential record for new car sales for the year in 2023. 

The forecast also shows strong signs for battery-electric vehicles and hybrids being sold here in Australia, with EVs totalling a 7.1% share of the market, while hybrids accounted for around 10% of new car sales in July, 2023. 

Which 3 Car Manufacturers Have the Top Percentage of the Market in Australia?

Here in Australia, Toyota, Mazda and Ford had the greatest percentage of market share for new cars sold in the month of July.  

They were followed by Ford, Hyundai, Kia, MG and Mitsubishi, with Tesla, Subaru and Isuzu rounding out the list of Australia’s best-selling car makes in July, 2023. 

How Many Cars Have Sold in Australia in 2023?

So far, Australians have purchased 678,618 new vehicles in 2023, marking the strongest year-to-date sales for the month of July in five years and signifying how manufacturers have caught up after production slow-downs and component shortages hampered production rates for new vehicles.
