What Engines Are Available for the Mazda CX-60?

Mazda is offering the CX-60 range with a choice of three engines.

The base G40 model picks up a 3.3-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with a 48V mild hybrid system that pushes out 209kW of power and 450Nm of torque and offers a 0-100km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds.

Opting for Mazda’s D50e adds a 3.3-litre turbocharged inline-six turbo diesel engine that produces 187kW of power and 500Nm of torque with the same mild-hybrid tech and a 7.3 second 0-100km/h time.

Mazda’s range-topping P50e range comes powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit paired with an electric motor that produces a combined 241kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

All members of the CX-60 family receive an eight-speed automatic transmission and a clever all-wheel drive system.

Is the Mazda CX-60 Comfortable to Drive?

We’re pleased to report that the driving experience on offer in the CX-60 range is absolutely sublime.

The base models offer a generous wave of acceleration thanks to their powerful inline-six engines, while the range-topping CX-60 PHEV is an absolute peach thanks to the electric motor’s instant torque injection.

Around town, the CX-60 is a super strong performer, offering a neat and well-mannered midsize SUV that is easy to navigate through the urban jungle thanks in part to the well-weighted steering rack and the visibility.

In terms of the suspension, it’s clear that Mazda had some premium European rivals in mind when setting up the CX-60, which is remarkably well-credentialled on a curved road.

Pick up the pace around town and you’ll find a decent amount of suspension travel on smaller and medium-sized bumps, though hitting them at higher speeds shows that Mazda has set up the CX-60 on the firmer side.

While this isn’t the typical setup for a midsize SUV, it mirrors that of a more premium European package, which means the CX-60 offers a tonne of stability at higher speeds that makes it a great grand tourer.

All up, the CX-60 is a strong midsize SUV performer on a mix of Australian country roads and town arteries.

While it rides on the firm side, it’s far from uncomfortable and actually offers a heap of competence in the corners if you’re looking for a spirited SUV package.

    Is it Fuel Efficient?

The Mazda CX-60 range is impressively fuel-efficient, especially in the case of the D50e turbo-diesel and, of course, the range-topping plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

    • G40e (petrol) Combined Cycle Fuel Economy: 7.4L/100km

    • D50e (diesel) Combined Cycle Fuel Economy: 4.9L/100km

    • P50e (PHEV) Combined Cycle Fuel Economy: 2.1L/100km

How Much Fuel Does the Mazda CX-60 Use Around Town?

    • G40e (petrol) Urban Cycle Fuel Economy: 9.8L/100km

    • D50e (diesel) Urban Cycle Fuel Economy: 5.2L/100km

    • P50e (PHEV) Urban Cycle Fuel Economy: N/A

How Much Fuel Does the Mazda CX-60 Use on the Highway?

    • G40e (petrol): 6.0L/100km

    • D50e (diesel): 4.7L/100km

    • P50e (PHEV): N/A

How Far Can the CX-60 P50e PHEV Drive on a Single Charge?

Mazda’s P50e comes fitted with a 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers up to 76km of all-electric driving range when fully charged, according to tests on the ADR cycle.

    Is it Practical and Spacious?

Luxurious interior designs have always been a strong selling point of the Mazda brand, and the latest range of CX-60s go to show the company remains one of the best in the business.

While prices for the CX-60 range stand higher than comparable siblings within the Mazda lineup, this has allowed the company to add even more luxurious finishes and materials.

Step inside and you’ll notice there’s an abundance of headroom and a great view out at your surroundings.

Look down and you’ll see the front of the cabin picks up a very familiar layout to that of previous Mazda SUVs, though storage options are considerably more generous thanks to the bulkier centre console.

The chunky centre console houses a split-fold armrest with a tonne of storage for valuables inside, as well as cupholders hidden out of sight by a cover and a large storage tray behind the gear lever for smartphones.

What sets Mazda apart from its main rivals isn’t just the design of the cabin, it’s the attention to detail and the quality of the materials used, even in the base model, that makes the CX-60 feel truly special.

Move to the second row of the cabin and things are equally as impressive for rear passengers, with a significant space premium on offer over the comparable CX-5 midsize SUV.

There’s more legroom on offer, meaning adults won’t have a problem behind a tall driver, while the lofty roofline makes things a spacious experience in the rear.

The second row of the Mazda CX-60 also picks up a set of ISOFIX anchors and three top tether mounts for forward and rear-facing child seats, as well as a fold-down armrest with cupholders and USB ports to keep the family charged up.

How Big is the Mazda CX-60’s Boot?

The Mazda CX-60 has a boto measuring in at 477L, which is a decent chunk more than you’ll find in the more affordable CX-5 with its 438L boot.

Fold down the rear seats in their 40/20/40 arrangement and you’ll find the CX-60’s boot expands to a maximum 1726L, helping to accommodate bulky cargo and sports equipment.

    Is it Safe?

The Mazda CX-60 range is exceptionally safe thanks to its solid build quality and impressive active safety equipment lists which are included in all members of the lineup, including the entry-level CX-60 Evolve.

As standard, the CX-60 range picks up forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking with both pedestrian and cyclist detection and junction assist, as well as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, forward obstruction warnings, lane-keep assist, a rear-view camera with front & rear parking sensors and tyre pressure monitoring.

Step up to the range-topping CX-60 Azami and you’ll receive a surround-view camera, cruising & traffic support, driver attention monitoring and front cross-traffic alerts.

Does the Mazda CX-60 Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?

The Mazda CX-60 has been awarded ANCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating after testing in 2022.

In those tests, the CX-60 secured a strong safety record with the following scores:

    • Adult Occupant Protection: 91%

    • Child Occupant Protection: 93%

    • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 89%

    • Safety Assist: 77%

What Warranty Does the Mazda CX-60 Come With?

Mazda currently offers the CX-60 range with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty here in Australia.

For those opting for the CX-60 plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the battery and high-voltage components are backed by an eight-year warranty.

Service intervals for the G40 petrol and P50e plug-in hybrid stand at 12 months/15,000km, while the D50e diesel needs to be serviced every 12 months/10,000km.

Our Verdict: Is the Mazda CX-60 Worth it?

Mazda has been at the pointy end of the SUV pack for years now, with the latest CX-60 range only cementing its position as a leader in quality interiors, driving dynamics and family-friendly motoring.

With three engine options split across three different trim levels, there’s a CX-60 for a range of budgets and buyer expectations, speaking to the quality of the overall package.

As a result, we can’t help but recommend that you add the CX-60 to your shortlist if you’re looking for a more premium midsize SUV that won’t break the bank.
