Is it Comfortable to Drive?

A top priority for buyers looking at the compact SUV segment is a comfortable and relaxing driving nature that is perfectly suited to short hops around town as a daily driver.

In that sense, the CX-30 G20e is a strong performer, offering buyers a smooth and extremely user-friendly package that benefits from some mild hybrid technology to save fuel in the process.

Under the bonnet, the CX-30 G20e receives a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 24-volt mild hybrid system that pushes out 114kW of power and 200Nm of torque, which powers the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

While power figures are relatively modest, the G20e offers more than enough power to get off the line or pick up speed while moving in the majority of driving situations, making it perfect for the urban jungle and even a capable long-distance tourer when needed.

The CX-30 platform excels in the urban jungle, with its compact dimensions making for a particularly easy package to park in tight quarters, and thanks to a lightweight steering platform, easy to maneuver in traffic and tight city streets.

Mazda has fitted the CX-30 with a particularly impressive suspension system that remains comfortable on a mix of road surfaces but offers enough support to actually enjoy taking corners with some space.

As a complete package, then, the CX-30 offers buyers a healthy mix of the most important driving characteristics that make it easy to navigate the urban environment and, perhaps most importantly, comfortable along the journey.

Is the CX-30 Practical and Spacious?

The CX-30’s platform sits somewhere in the middle of the CX-3’s small SUV package and the midsize SUV CX-5, which gives buyers more interior space and practicality than the pint-sized CX-3.

While the G20e might sit in the middle of the CX-30 lineup, first impressions of the cabin are extremely positive in terms of the premium design and clever packaging that makes it feel like a higher-spec variant.

The driver and front passenger are treated to a heap of headroom and adjustment in the driving position, with a great view out over the low-slung dashboard that gives the CX-30 a great deal of visibility.

The front of the cabin is sleek, uncrowded, and particularly user-friendly for drivers that adds a set of electronically-adjustable seats and practical elements like a pair of cup holders, large door bins, a storage tray behind the gear lever and additional storage inside the folding armrest.

Move to the cabin and you’ll find a much more spacious cabin than what’s on offer in the CX-3, which gives the CX-30 platform some genuine family-friendly credentials that can’t be said of a number of small SUV packages.

Rear legroom is decent, even for tall adults, while there’s absolutely no complaints when it comes to headroom in the second row of the cabin, which is a common downfall of compact SUVs.

Finally, the CX-30 has boot space figures totaling 422L, which includes the under-floor storage area beneath the boot floor, which is significantly larger than the CX-3 and extremely close to what’s on offer in the midsize CX-5 package.

Is it Safe?

The Mazda CX-30 has been awarded ANCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating, scoring 99% for adult protection, 88% for child protection, 80% for pedestrian protection and 76% for its safety assist technologies.

As standard, the G20e gains a heap of active safety equipment as standard, including front and rear autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, a surround-view camera with parking sensors, front cross-traffic alerts, driver monitoring and traffic jam assist.

Is it Fuel Efficient?

As a hybrid, you’d expect the CX-30 G20e to offer some significant fuel savings over other members of the CX-30 family.

In that regard, the G20e is slightly underwhelming, and while it does offer fuel savings over its non-hybrid siblings, it’s not quite as significant as you might expect.

On a combined cycle, the CX-30 G20e returns fuel economy figures of 6.3L/100km which is slightly better than the thirstiest member of the CX-30 family at 6.8L/100km, but remains less fuel efficient than the range-topping X20 which is rated at 6.0L/100km.

Our Verdict: Is the Mazda CX-30 G20e Evolve Hybrid Worth it?

The CX-30 package is a strong performer that ticks all the important boxes that buyers demand from a compact crossover SUV.

It’s comfortable, easy to drive around town, offers an extremely handsome cabin with enough space for a small family, and comes generously equipped with entertainment and safety features.

While the fuel savings of the G20e might be negligible for a hybrid, the CX-30 is already a strong performer when it comes to fuel efficiency, making for a great addition to the compact crossover SUV segment that is well-worth your attention.
