What Features Does the Ford Transit Custom Have?

The 2024 Ford Transit Custom comes packaged with a decent list of features for the price.

Both the short wheelbase (SWB) and long wheelbase (LWB) variants receive adaptive cruise control, a 180-degree rear-view camera, LED interior and load bay lighting, four driving modes, cloth upholstery, an electric parking brake, a wireless smartphone charger, load bay protection, side and rear door protection, a load bay liner, 5G modem and a 13-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.

The MY24 Ford Transit Custom range also picks up a healthy list of safety equipment that we’ll cover later.

A set of loading doors on either side of the cabin is also available for the Transit Custom range, which is an optional extra priced at $1,000.

What Engine Powers the Ford Transit Custom?

Ford is sticking by its turbo-diesel beating heart for the MY24 Transit Custom range.

That means you’ll find a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel lurking underneath producing 125kW of power and 390Nm of torque which powers the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Is it Fuel Efficient?

Ford says that the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit powering the Transit Custom range is rated at 8.0L/100km on the combined cycle, which makes it reasonably fuel-efficient compared to its main rivals in the cargo van segment.

Is the Interior Practical and Spacious?

Some of the biggest changes for the MY24 Transit Custom range have been reserved for the cockpit, which remains a super strong performer when it comes to interior space and practicality.

The driver picks up a new 12-inch partial digital instrument cluster that helps to modernise its workhorse nature, while a massive 13-inch infotainment display dominates the dashboard and slingshots it well into the 21st century.

Of course, headroom is exceptional thanks to the tall profile meaning tall drivers and front passengers won’t have an issue squeezing inside.

The front picks up two bench seats - one for the driver, another for two passengers - that can accommodate adults three abreast up front, with the cockpit picking up a steep vertical dash design that allows for maximum legroom.

You’ll also find some clever under-seat storage options, as well as a storage tray beneath the air vents, atop the passenger-side dashboard and inside the large glovebox as well as some added storage options inside the door sill.

All up, the Transit Custom’s cockpit looks ready to work and offers enough space for three adults and comes filled with practical touches to make the workday or a holiday road trip less cluttered.

What are the Cargo Dimensions for the MY24 Ford Transit Custom?

The Ford Transit Custom range has a load bay measuring 2554mm in the short-wheelbase variant, rising up to 3450mm in the long-wheelbase Transit Custom.

This is a dramatic increase over the previous generation Transit Custom which measured 2554mm in the SWB and 2921mm in the LWB, and is the result of Ford’s new suspension hardware allowing for more interior space in the loadbay.

In terms of cargo volumes, Ford says that Transit Custom SWB is rated at 5.8m3 while the LWB can swallow up 6.8m3 of cargo.

  • Transit Custom SWB Cargo Volume: 5.8m3

  • Transit Custom LWB Cargo Volume: 6.8m3

Ford is yet to confirm the width and height dimensions for the Transit Custom range.

What are the Payload and Towing Figures for the MY24 Ford Transit Custom?

Ford says that payload figures for the Transit Custom SWB stand at 1269kg, while the Transit Custom LWB has payload figures totalling 1223kg.

This is a reduction from the previous 1353kg and 1291kg in the SWB and LWB variants, respectively, though the company has massively increased the Transit Custom’s braked towing figures.

All up, the Transit Custom range has braked towing capacities of 2500kg in both variants, which is a substantial 600kg increase over the outgoing Transit Custom.

  • SWB Payload: 1269 (down 84kg)

  • LWB Payload: 1223kg (down 68kg)

  • Braked Towing Capacity: 2500kg (up 600kg)

Is it Safe?

While the MY24 Ford Transit Custom range is yet to be officially tested by ANCAP, it’s safe to assume the latest generation will receive the same five-star safety rating as the previous Transit Custom range.

As standard, there’s a heap more safety equipment than its predecessor, with the updated safety equipment list including:

  • Autonomous emergency braking

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Pre-collision braking

  • Reverse brake assist

  • Blind-spot monitoring

  • Rear cross-traffic alerts

  • Safe exit warnings

  • Rear-view camera with 180-degree view

  • AEB Junction Assist

Our Verdict: Is the Ford Transit Custom Worth it?

Without getting our hands on it, it’s safe to assume that the latest generation Ford Transit Custom will offer material improvements over its predecessor, a package widely known as one of the leading cargo van options currently on the road.

Thanks to a suspension upgrade, the ride quality looks to improve dramatically while allowing for more cargo to be loaded inside, while the technology updates look to push it ahead of even its most contemporary rivals.

With competitive pricing and Ford’s expertise with practical workhorses considered, the MY24 Ford Transit Custom is well-deserving of a sport on your cargo van shortlist.
