VFACTS: Car Market Update for June 2023

We’ll be breaking down Australia’s most popular cars across all major segments, from hatchbacks to SUVs, sports cars to practical family sedans, work-ready utes and off-road 4x4 heroes. 

With that in mind, let’s get a car market update for June, 2023 with the help of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ latest VFACTS report.

Major Findings of the VFACTs June Report

The latest reporting for the month of June, 2023, gives us a few interesting snapshots of the automotive industry, showing clear signs of a recovery for manufacturers as they catch up on a backlog of orders amid supply shortages and production slow-downs. 

• In spite of the delays, vehicle deliveries were high, with a total of 124,926 vehicles delivered, which is 25 per cent higher than June 2022, while year-to-date sales are 8.2 per cent higher than the same point last year at 581,759. 
• Sales of electric vehicles are at record highs, outpacing hybrid vehicles with 11,042 EVs delivered all up, over 9020 hybrid vehicle sales. 
• The Toyota HiLux remains Australia’s most popular car, in spite of a 19 per cent drop in year-on-year sales, sales of the MG ZS have jumped 168 per cent, and deliveries of the Tesla Model Y have jumped 90.4 per cent. 
• Toyota also remains at the top spot in terms of the most popular manufacturer, delivering more than double that of its nearest rival, Mazda.

What is the Most Popular Vehicle Segment in Australia?

SUVs remain by far the most popular type of car purchased here in Australia, with the June edition of VFACTS confirming SUVs account for a 55.3% share of the overall market. 

Sales of SUVs were followed by light commercial vehicles, otherwise known as utes, which accounted for a 23.1% share of the market, followed by passenger cars with a 16.3% share, and heavy commercial vehicles with a 5.3% share. 

Of the overall figures, sales of midsize SUVs amounted to 22.6% of vehicles sold in June, 2023, followed by 4x4 utes with a 16.7% share, compact SUVs with a 14.2% share and large SUVs with a 12.3 share. 

Sales of small passenger cars shrunk in June, 2023, to just a 6.1% share of the overall vehicle mix.

What Are The Best-Selling Cars in Australia?

In June, 2023, the podium finishers for the best-selling cars in Australia were the Toyota HiLux at the top of the table with 6142 vehicles sold, Tesla Model Y in second place with 5560 deliveries, and the Ford Ranger in third place with 5334 vehicles sold.

What Are The Most Popular Car Manufacturers in Australia? 

For June 2023, Toyota remained by far the most popular manufacturer in Australia, outpacing its nearest competitor, Mazda, with double the amount of deliveries for the month. Mazda was followed by Hyundai, Ford and Kia to round out the top five most popular manufacturers in Australia.

How Many Electric Vehicles Were Sold in Australia in June, 2023?

The share of electric vehicles in the mix of Australian sales has grown to record highs, with 11,042 electric vehicles sold in June, 2023, which accounted for an 8.8 per cent share of overall vehicle deliveries.

Tesla has taken two of the three top spots when it comes to electric vehicle (EV) sales here in Australia in the first six months of 2023, with the Model Y sitting atop the leaderboard, followed by the Model 3 and the BYD Atto 3.

For the month of June, 2023, the Ford Ranger stands at the most popular 4x4 ute sold here in Australia, with 4895 vehicles sold during the month, followed closely by the Toyota HiLux with 4815 sales, and the Mazda BT-50 in third-place with 2002 deliveries.

What is the Most Popular Midsize SUV Sold in Australia? 

According to VFACTs, the most popular midsize SUV sold here in Australia throughout June was the Toyota RAV4 with 2858 vehicles sold, followed by the Hyundai Tucson and the Mazda CX-5 with 2667 and 1812 vehicles delivered, respectively. 

Looking at the midsize SUV segment priced over $60,000, the Tesla Model Y was the most popular mid-size SUV sold, followed by the Lexus NX and the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
