Convertibles make a bold statement, they’re a heap of fun to drive and thankfully in recent generations, they’ve come to offer far fewer sacrifices for buyers when it comes to value, features, and driving enjoyment.

Let’s take a closer look at seven of the best convertible cars you’ll find on the market here in Australia to help you in your search.

Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 is one of the most famous convertibles on the market and perhaps the pinnacle of driving enjoyment for a reasonable price tag.

Priced from $37,990, the entry-level MX-5 Roadster comes powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that sends 135kW of power and 205Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual, with an automatic also available.

Mazda’s recipe for the MX-5 has changed very little, combining a lightweight platform with a perfect 50-50 weight distribution, limited-slip differential and spirited naturally aspirated engine that offers the driver a heap of fun and engagement without the need for excessive speed.

It’s a sublime convertible that gives buyers a generous set of features including 17-inch alloys, LED head & tail lights, a posture control system, 7.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto as well as a heap of safety equipment all included in the base model.

Ford Mustang

Another heavyweight of the automotive industry, the Ford Mustang has been a favourite for those seeking American muscle in a sleek convertible body.

In its latest form, the Mustang High-Performance Convertible is priced from $61,890 and features a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 236kW of power and 448Nm of torque.

Upgrading to the fire-breathing 5.0-litre V8 brings power and torque to 339kW/556Nm respectively, but brings the price tag to $75,990.

On the handling front, the Mustang has become far more dynamic than previous generations, with Ford lightening the platform and adding suspension components that make it a true performer in both a straight line and around corners.

As standard, the entry-level Mustang convertible comes riding on 19-inch alloys and receives LED lights, an active exhaust system, 12-inch digital driver display, leather upholstery with heated seats and an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto atop a heap of safety equipment.

Porsche 718 Boxster

When it comes to open-top European motoring, the Porsche Boxster name has remained at the top of wishlists for countless enthusiasts.

While the name has changed slightly to the 718, Porsche is sticking by its open-top DNA and offers the platform in both hard-top Cayman and convertible Boxster variants that is one of the best-driving roadsters currently on the road.

The 718 Boxster is powered by a mid-mounted, 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 220kW of power and 380Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic.

With a kerb weight of just 1,335kg, the Boxster platform offers a massive power-to-weight ratio that makes for an extremely sporty convertible experience on the road.

Better still, the Boxster is happy to dial everything back and become a comfortable, premium commuter when you’re looking to travel from A to B in comfort and style.

BMW Z4

The BMW Z4 is a great two-seat convertible for buyers looking for a slice of open-top motoring with a heaping of European comfort and premium features.

The Z4 range, priced from $90,900 here in Australia features a choice of three engines, including two tunes of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping turbocharged in-line six that produces a massive 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

With some of the sharpest steering on the market, the Z4 excels when put under pressure in the corners, while the adaptive suspension system makes for an extremely engaging sports car package that remains comfortable on daily drives.

As standard, you’ll find 18-inch alloys, LED lights, adaptive cruise control, Vernasca leather upholstery and a pair of 10.25-inch screens as standard, while higher-spec variants gain 19-inch alloys, M Sport brakes and a limited-slip differential.

Mini Cooper Classic

If you’re looking for a charismatic little convertible with a heap of personality, look no further than the latest generation of Mini Cooper Classic convertibles, which are priced from $43,680 here in Australia.

The Mini Cooper comes powered by a spirited little 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder producing 100kW of power and 220Nm, while there’s a more powerful four-cylinder turbo available for Cooper S and John Cooper Works variants that give the Mini seriously impressive performance stats.

The Mini Cooper’s platform is perfect for short hops around town and long distance open-top roadtrips, making for an adaptable convertible for whatever your mood.

Standard equipment for the entry-level Mini Cooper includes LED headlights, semi-autonomous parking, cloth upholstery with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 5.5-inch digital instrument cluster with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Jeep Wrangler

For those looking for maximum fun in the sun with the added bonus of off-road pedigree, the Jeep Wrangler is an unconventional but undeniably impressive member of Australia’s convertible lineup.

Prices for the Wrangler range kick off from $74,950, which comes powered by a 3.6-litre V6 producing 209kW of power and 347Nm of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Wrangler is fitted with some serious off-road equipment, including a two-speed transfer case, full-time four-wheel drive system, protective skid plates and a set of removable doors and hardtop roof, meaning buyers can head off-road and feel the wind blowing through their hair.

Standard equipment for the entry-level Wrangler includes a set of LED lights, 17-inch alloys, keyless entry & start, 8.4-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto which is paired with a nine-speaker Alpine sound system.

Audi A5

The final entrant on our list gives buyers a slice of open-top driving with enough space for you and your family, the Audi A5 S Line convertible.

The Audi A5 convertible is priced at $98,100, and comes powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces an impressive 183kW of power and 370Nm of torque thrown to all four wheels via the seven-speed dual clutch transmission and Quattro AWD system.
